Voiceworks is Australia’s premier youth literary journal, published quarterly by Express Media. For 30 years, we’ve been the stomping ground for remarkable young storytellers and have fostered some of Australia’s greatest literary talents.

Voiceworks #104, ‘Cake’, the first issue under the editorship of Lucy Adams, is stuffed to the gills with exciting new fiction, poetry, nonfiction and visual art by people under the age of 25.

To kick off the issue, we have ‘Meat’, a funny, tender and closely observed character portrait from Eda Gunaydin. Eda is a 22-year-old writer based in Western Sydney who was shortlisted for the 2016 Monash Undergraduate Prize for Creative Writing and longlisted for the 2015 Scribe Nonfiction Prize. She describes this short story best herself:

‘‘Meat’ is about the women I watched doing backbreaking labour, waged and unwaged, every day, growing up. Turkish working class women sometimes summon bootstraps out of nowhere, and pull themselves, and others, up with them. What better time to write this than during the renaissance of the halal snack pack?’

‘Meat’ is just the first piece in this strong collection by talented young writers. Buy a copy and you’ll find nonfiction that explores the psychology behind a never-ending bowl of soup, or the history of Maltese immigration through the humble prickly pear. Let our poetry take you from smoky Berlin balconies to the Chinese city of Klang before getting intimate with a soggy lemon sponge.

I hope you enjoy digging in to Voiceworks #104, ‘Cake’, and thank you for supporting Express Media. Your support ensures that we continue to provide young writers with feedback, development opportunities, and a safe space for experimenting and publishing their work.
