Voiceworks Edcommer Olivia Shenken is #HereForStories

As a part of our #HereForStories campaign, Chapter Two: Our Noble Heroes introduces the people who make the work Express Media and Voiceworks do possible; our lovely team!

We sat down with Voiceworks Fiction Edcommer Olivia Shenken to ask her about her work and why she sees value in what we do.

1. Why did you join the Voiceworks team?

Because it seemed like a nice environment to learn about editing from some really cool people, and to support and collaborate with the writers whose pieces I’ll be editing.

2. What do you like most about your work with Voiceworks?

I’ve only just started really, but so far I’ve enjoyed getting to meet other members of the Edcomm – I already have a list of book recommendations from them which is great! I’ve enjoyed seeing how the selection process works, and also reading submissions – it’s definitely teaching me how to look at the bigger picture of a story.

3. What do you see as the most valuable aspect of your work with Voiceworks?

Learning! Even in the little time I’ve been involved, I feel like I’ve learnt a lot just by seeing how things work behind the scenes, and I can’t wait to learn more from everyone.

4. Outside of your work with Voiceworks, what do you do and what do you like to do?

Currently I’m studying for a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in linguistics and literary studies, and I’m just finishing up as an editor at the Monash University student magazine, Lot’s Wife. I read a lot (recently trying to read more Jewish-inspired sci-fi/fantasy), I write, I do a bit of knitting, and I’m learning Yiddish.

5. How has your involvement with Voiceworks benefited you or your community?

As a writer, Voiceworks was one of the first places I ever submitted to, and so getting feedback on my rejected work was really helpful and encouraged me to submit elsewhere. When I did get a piece published with Voiceworks, I had a great editing experience and got to read for the launch, so it was just a fun time all around and a great confidence boost!
