For those of us not lucky enough to make it to Alice Spring’s Eye of the Storm Writers’ Festival you can listen or watch some of the panels via ABC’s Big Ideas. Definitely check out Hungry Eyes: Women, Sex and Power with Kate Holden, Krissy Kneen, Laura Jean McKay and Anna Krien, journalist and writer whose latest book, Night Games: Sex, Power and Sport, chronicles the dark side of footy culture.

Opportunities and Events

The closing date for Eureka Street’s Margaret Dooley Award for Young Writers is approaching. Submissions close July 15, so if you’re a writer under 30 make sure you get your final draft finished soon. See the website for details.

Writers in Canberra, those lovely folks at Scissors Paper Pen have more workshop goodness lined up for you. Spend an hour with Eleri Mai Harris on Thursday June 6 from 6-7pm at the ACT Writers’ Centre. It’ll be a table of comics, a pen, paper, and a projector, and you braving an illustration of your own. By the end of the hour you’ll have your own zine ready to distribute. Materials and photocopier supplied. Details on their website. SPP are also running a flash fiction workshop this month, email them for details.

Are you aged 18-23? The Questions Writing Prize is now open for fiction and non-fiction writers. Entries close July 1, see the website for more information.

For those in Western Australia, a workshop on writing Young Adult Fiction at Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre will take place on Saturday June 8. Check the website for details.
