NYWM: Day 19

Let’s be honest, we all need help sometimes. That’s why having a writing mentor is always handy to have.

A writing mentor isn’t necessarily an editor per say. It’s more of a casual relationship that it is a formal one – writing mentors are there to assist you as you progress throughout your written pieces, having hints, advice and feedback that ensure you are writing at your best.

So how does one go about obtaining a writing mentor? Well, its simple, just ask! The worst they can say is ‘no’ right?

In terms of finding them, going to writers group or getting touch with your local writers centre is always a good idea, as they can refer you to their contacts and any writing groups that specialise in this. Every state has one, so its simply a matter of using google to find which one is closest to you.

There is actually a site dedicated to writing mentors, check it out here. It could be a good place to start!

Also have a read of these steps on how to land a writing mentor.

Best of luck!

Opportunities and events

We’re always on the lookout for writers to be featured as part of NYWM. If you’re happy to answer a few questions about you and your writing, please fill out this form.

There is always the age old debate of whether or not freelance writers should be paid for their work, and now you can be part of the conversation! Writers Victoria are holding their ‘Pay the Writers’ manifesto event on 30 July. More details here.

Social media is an excellent way to network and put yourself out there, but where do you start? Fret no more, because NSW Writers Centre are holding a seminar about social media for beginners! RSVP here.
