Express Media is thrilled to announce Queensland writer Bri Lee as the recipient of the inaugural Kat Muscat Fellowship.

With the support of the Fellowship, Bri (24) will complete a narrative nonfiction manuscript exploring the legal industry and its interaction with women. The project will discuss theories of feminism and feminist jurisprudence in an accessible way, as well as themes of rape culture and mental health stigma.

On Bri’s appointment, the Muscat family said:

“We are very pleased and excited that the inaugural Kat Muscat Fellowship has been awarded to Bri Lee. Bri’s application emerged clearly in a strong field of 36 creative young writers and editors. We wish Bri every success with this challenging and important work. We would also like to thank Express Media for establishing The Kat Muscat Fellowship and the Custodial Committee for the professional manner in which the Fellowship has been put into operation.”

Bri will work closely with Express Media throughout 2016 to develop and complete the project.

The Kat Muscat Fellowship offers professional development up to the value of $3,000 for an editorial project or work of writing by a young female-identifying writer or editor. The Fellowship aims to continue Kat’s legacy and further develop the future of defiant and empathic young Australian women.

Kat Muscat was a brilliant young mind of the Australian writing community, whose formidable talent was demonstrated through her incisive writing and perceptive editing. Kat was an integral part of Express Media for many years, before becoming Editor of Voiceworks from 2012 to 2014. Throughout her 10 years with Express Media, Kat helped to shape the career of young writers and editors from all around Australia.

The Kat Muscat Fellow is selected by the Custodial Committee of The Kat Muscat Legacy Projects, which includes members of Express Media’s board and staff, the Muscat family and appointed community members. The Fellowship is made possible with the generous support of the community and the Muscat family.
