Express Media, in partnership with Propel Youth Arts WA, is delighted to present Making Tracks: Perth, a travelling pop-up workshop series and zine publication aimed at developing the work of young writers in Australia.
Over four workshops every fortnight, 10 young writers will meet with an Express Media writer and editor to hone their writing skills and workshop a piece for publication. With two hours set aside for each workshop, the first hour will be reserved for teaching writing fundamentals including structure, tone, ethics and editing, and the second hour will be used to develop their own work. They will learn how to work with an editor and also edit their own writing in preparation for publication in Making Tracks, an Express Media zine sharing stories from young people living in Australia.
This workshop series provides opportunity for emerging writers to workshop their writing, create and nourish a local youth writing community and a direct avenue to getting their work published. Following the workshop series, each participant has a week to submit their work to Express Media ready for publication.
In 2018, Express Media presented Making Tracks in Daylesford and Castlemaine, and in 2019, Express Media presents Making Tracks in Wodonga and Perth. Making Tracks is free but registrations are vital. Each participant will receive a free Express Media Membership and four back issues of Express’ premier literary journal, Voiceworks, all valued at $75.

Associate Producer | Maddie Godfrey | @howtobeheld
Maddie Godfrey is a writer, poet and educator who aims to facilitate compassionate conversations about social issues. At 23, they have performed poetry at The Sydney Opera House, The Royal Albert Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral (London) and Glastonbury Festival (2017). Maddie’s publishing highlights include Westerly Magazine, Button Poetry, Scum Mag and Cordite Poetry Review. In 2018 Maddie’s debut poetry collection, titled ‘How To Be Held’ was released by Burning Eye Books (UK). Currently Maddie is working with Propel Youth Arts WA as the Creative Coordinator of Youth Week WA 2019. They are also completing a PhD at Curtin University, focusing on feminist activism and prose poetry. Maddie is not a morning person.

Guest Artist | Rashida Murphy
Rashida Murphy lives in Perth, Western Australia. She is the author of the Dundee International shortlisted novel, The Historian’s Daughter (UWA Publishing). Her fiction, poetry and essays have appeared in Westerly, Open Road Review, Landscapes, Of Indian Origin, Southern Crossings, Veils, Halos & Shackles, We Will Be Shelter, and Feminine Rising.
She has won writing residencies in WA, NSW, Victoria and India. She has been an invited guest at several writers festivals, a mentor for emerging writers and run successful workshops in Perth’s writing community. She is currently an Adjunct at Edith Cowan University and is working on her second novel.
Making Tracks: Perth, Zine Artist | Madeleine Antill
Maddy has been drawing things since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Primarily working as a graphic designer for the past three years- if you can think it, she can probably draw it, illustrate it & bring it to life. When she doesn’t have her head down, furiously scribbling, you’ll find her playing ice hockey.
Maddy holds a BA of Graphic Design & Creative Advertising, and Photography & Illustration Design from Curtin University and has worked with Propel Youth Arts, City of Vincent & a number of Perth nightclubs and bars, including Amplifier Capitol, The Newport Hotel & The Standard.
