Name: Jake Dennis

Age: 22

What is your NYWM goal?

During NYWM I would like to finish working on the 4 poems that I’ve been workshopping as part of Australia Poetry’s online poetry workshopping course with Brook Emery. I would also like to send out some poems to poetry journals and competitions and finally put some more work into my first collection.

What kind of writing do you do?

I’m writing a kids adventure novel for 9-12 year olds! I also write short stories and nonfiction. Here are some poems (Landscape, Matisse Blue Nude II and Professor Krote’s Death) and some journalism (Matchbox 20/INXS show, Soul to Soul and Rhianna).

What inspires or motivates you to write and reach your goals?

Excellent poetry by my favourite poets Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and Gwen Harwood. Visual art is also a major source of inspiration for me. I am a highly driven man and so I am determined to be published as much as I can manage despite working full-time and managing my singing career.

What are you currently reading?

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas (for “Jake’s Perth Book Club” on Facebook). I’m also reading John Meyer’s Heartbreaker: A Memoir of Judy Garland and Lord Weary’s Castle by Robert Lowell.

You can find Jake’s work at his website, on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Soundcloud.

We’re showcasing young Australian writers all through National Young Writers’ Month. If you would like to be featured on our blog fill in this form.
