Express Media, in partnership with Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres is delighted to present Making Tracks: Canberra, a travelling pop-up workshop series and zine publication aimed at developing the work of young writers in Australia.
Over four workshops, 10 young writers will meet with an Express Media writer and editor to hone their writing skills and workshop a piece for publication. With two hours set aside for each workshop, the first hour will be reserved for teaching writing fundamentals including structure, tone, ethics and editing, and the second hour will be used to develop their own work. They will learn how to work with an editor and also edit their own writing in preparation for publication in Making Tracks, an Express Media zine sharing stories from young people living in Australia.
This workshop series provides opportunity for emerging writers to workshop their writing, create and nourish a local youth writing community and a direct avenue to getting their work published. Following the workshop series, each participant has a week to submit their work to Express Media ready for publication.
Over the last two years, Express Media has presented Making Tracks in Daylesford, Castlemaine, Wodonga and Perth. In season 1 of 2020, Express Media presents Making Tracks in Canberra and Adelaide.
Making Tracks is free but registrations are vital. Each participant will receive a free Express Media Membership and four back issues of Express’ premier literary journal, Voiceworks, all valued at $75.
Making Tracks: Canberra is led by writer and editor Lauretta Flack, with a special guest artist Zoya Patel joining us in week 3.

Our Artists
Lauretta Flack is a writer and editor based in Canberra. They are a former editor of experimental digital writing for Voiceworks Online. In their work they are particularly interested in queerness and art theory, and especially the intersection of the two. They can be found on twitter at @laur_eater.
Zoya Patel is the author of critically-acclaimed memoir, No Country Woman, essays on race, religion and feminism. She is the Founding Editor of independent feminist journal, Feminartsy, through which she published the work of writers from across Australia and now hosts online courses and the Read Like A Feminist Bookclub. Zoya writes fiction, non-fiction and memoir, and has had her work published in a range of publications including Junkee, Women’s Agenda, i-D.co, Right Now, The Canberra Times and more.
