Voiceworks Submission Guidelines
We accept submissions for all areas of the magazine at all times. Please read all of the submission guidelines below, do not just assume that you meet them. If you are unsure about something, please contact us.
You should address all submissions to editor@expressmedia.org.au. Please attach the piece(s) you're submitting as a Word file. Do not paste your submission into the email itself. Do not include your name in the Word file.
The body of your email should include your full name and age, e-mail address, postal address, phone number, and a bio of no more than 25 words. Please also include how you found out about the magazine.
We only accept previously unpublished work by writers under 25. This means that if you have turned 25 at the time of submission, you are too old (sorry). Beyond print media, we also consider anything publicly available online as published, including your blog.
For fiction, we accept a maximum of two pieces, which should be no more than 3000 words each.
For poetry, we accept a maximum of three pieces, and no more than 100 lines in total. Please find some ideas on improving your poetry submission here.
For nonfiction, please pitch your piece using this template before sending through the full article, at least two weeks before the final submission deadline. For more information on nonfiction in the magazine and our pitching system, see here. For specific nonfiction ideas for the next issue, see this page.
For visual art, including illustrations, comics, photos, etc., keep in mind that we print in black and white (greyscale), and that our pages are not quite A4: they are 210mm x 270mm. Please supply your images at 300dpi and at actual size.
We pay $100 for each piece we use.
If your submission is unsuccessful, we will provide you with detailed feedback. We have a small staff and a lot of submissions, so please be patient. If you think something's gone wrong or you haven't heard back from us after 3 months, please get in touch.
Due to our funding arrangements, please note that we can only publish one international submission per issue.
If you have any queries, please address them to editor@expressmedia.org.au.
